Molik Advances in Sarasota Open

SARASOTA, Fla. (AP) _ Australia’s Alicia Molik hit a forehand winner on the first point after a 2-hour rain delay to beat Mashona Washington 6-4, 6-4 in the Sarasota Open on Wednesday

Molik, serving at triple-match point when play was suspended because of the rain, advanced to a second-round match against Janette Husarova of Slovakia. Husarova beat third-seed Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario in straight sets Tuesday.

In an all-Russian match, Anastasia Myskina outlasted qualifier Alina Jidkova 7-6 (5), 6-2.

In a second-round match, Tatiana Panova, also of Russia, beat Gala Leon Garcia of Spain 6-4, 6-2. Panova will play the Molik-Husarova winner in the quarterfinals.
