Orange County reaches settlement over untreated jail inmate
SANTA ANA, Calif. (AP) — Orange County has reached a settlement with a former California jail nurse who says she was prevented from treating an inmate.
The Orange County Register reported Thursday that the Board of Supervisors approved a settlement for about $300,000 Tuesday in a closed-door session.
Attorneys say licensed vocational nurse Jennifer Westfield was threatened by a deputy to remain quiet about an inmate found barely conscious in the men’s shower Aug. 8, 2016.
Westfield says she was criticized for being concerned.
Officials say Westfield resigned in August 2016 because she felt unsafe working with the deputy, identified only by his last name in court documents.
The Orange County Sheriff’s Department says it is looking into the allegations and working on better responding to the health needs of its inmates.
