LION ATTACK

BURLINGTON, N.C. _ A lion killed a young worker at a wildlife conservatory Sunday after it got loose from a locked space, the center said. Alexandra Black, 22, of New Palestine, Indiana, was killed Sunday after being attacked by the lion in an enclosure that was being cleaned at the Conservators Center, news outlets reported, citing a statement from the Caswell County Sheriff’s Office. The lion was shot and killed after attempts to tranquilize the animal failed, deputies said. SENT: 350 words, photo. Moved late Sunday and available for use.

DEATH PENALTY-INDIANA

CROWN POINT _ Indiana prosecutors have quietly dropped efforts seeking the execution of an Ohio inmate for her role in killing a 7-year-old girl during a 1984 crime spree. The Lake County prosecutor and the Indiana attorney general’s office signed an agreement last month withdrawing a demand for the execution of 56-year-old Debra Denise Brown. She and Alton Coleman received death sentences for killing Tamika Turks of Gary, Indiana, and murders in Ohio. Coleman was executed in Ohio in 2002, while Brown’s Ohio sentence was commuted to life in prison on grounds that she was mentally disabled. SENT: 130 words.

_ THREE DEAD-MARION: Northeastern Indiana police are investigating the deaths of two boys and a man whose bodies were found in a home. The bodies were found around noon Sunday in a house in Marion, about 60 miles northeast of Indianapolis.

_ STATE TROOPERS-SHERIFFS: At least three veteran Indiana State Police troopers are leaving the agency as they take office as county sheriffs.

INDIANAPOLIS _ The Indiana Pacers try to match the second-most wins in the NBA this season when they host Atlanta in a Monday matinee. Indiana has won four straight including a road win last week against the Hawks. Atlanta has won two in a row but has the fourth-lowest winning percentage in the Eastern Conference. By Michael Marot.
