No.8 Old Dominion 82, No.4 Conn. 77
NORFOLK, Va. (AP) _ Lucienne Berthieu had 18 points and 14 rebounds, including a layup that gave No. 8 Old Dominion the lead with eight minutes to go as the Lady Monarchs beat No. 4 Connecticut 82-77 Saturday.
Aubrey Eblin hit a 3-pointer for Old Dominion (19-3) with 9:13 left to tie the score, 58-58. Berthieu’s basket less than a minute later put the Lady Monarchs in the lead, 60-59, for the first time with 8:24 to play.
Connecticut (21-4) went almost five minutes without a field goal late, but Svetlana Abrosimova twice got the Huskies to within one in the last 1:12.
With Old Dominion ahead 80-77, Eblin hit two free throws with 11 seconds left to put the game out of reach as the Lady Monarchs avenged a 93-72 loss the first time the teams met, Jan. 19, 1998, in Hartford.
UConn built to a 42-36 halftime lead behind 67 percent shooting from the field and 16 points from Abrosimova, who finished with 27.
The Huskies opened with a 16-2 run, holding Old Dominion scoreless for the first three and a half minutes. But the Lady Monarchs then scored the next 13 points to get within one point, 16-15.
Old Dominion tied the game, 26-26, with 4:49 to go in the first half. But Abrosimova’s 3-pointer put Connecticut back on top, 29-26.
Jessica Williams added 17 points for Old Dominion, Eblin had 14 and Sharron Francis had 10.
Shea Ralph had 15 points for Connecticut, and Tamika Williams had 14.
