HONG KONG (AP) _ Sandra Volker of Germany set a new record of 27:86 seconds today in the 50-meter women's backstroke event at the Epson World Cup short-course swimming competition.

Volker broke the previous record of 27:93 seconds set by American Angel Martino on Dec. 28, 1993.

More than 70 swimmers are participating in the two-day competition at the Kowloon Park swimming center. It is the first leg of seven-venue 1995 World Cup.
