Waupun Legion Veteran of the Year named
WAUPUN -- Vernon Farley is the American Legion Post 210 Veteran of the Year.
After graduating from high school in Milwaukee in 1946 Farley went to work at a hardware store.
Then in 1951, in the midst of the Korean Conflict, Farley was drafted.
He was at Camp McCoy, Wisconsin, for a year, then sent to Germany.
“His was the first company to build a float bridge over the Rhine River,” said his wife Jane.
Vernon met Jane at Buffalo Lake, Wisconsin, and they corresponded with each other when he was stationed in Germany.
After his honorable discharge in 1953, the couple got married in Milwaukee, and ended up living Fox Lake.
“We got married 67 years ago,” said Farley who worked for John Deere for 25 years before retiring.
Farley was active in the American Legion for 47 years, while his wife Jane was president of the Legion Auxiliary for 20 years.
“He was Commander of the Fond du Lac County American Legion for four years, and commander of the Waupun American Legion for two years, and adjutant for 17 years,” said Jane.
Bob Patrouille is legion commander.
“Vern was my secretary/treasurer for 10 years. He was my right-hand man. He deserves this honor,” Patrouille said. “He’s very dedicated. Whenever you need him for help he is there. And all the family thinks Legion. What a great family.”
The Farleys have seven boys: Jim, Rick, Bob, John, Dennis, Jerry and Todd, 12 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.
