MU Orchestra hosts Wednesday concert
HUNTINGTON — The Marshall University Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Elizabeth Reed Smith, will present the program “Out of This World” at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 5, in Marshall’s Smith Recital Hall.
The diverse concert program will begin with Beethoven’s “Leonore Overture No. 3” and will end with “Mars” from “The Planets” by Gustav Holst. In between the orchestra will perform two works by Finnish composer Armas Jrnefelt, a string orchestra piece by contemporary Canadian composer Vivian Fung, and three excerpts from Shostakovich’s opera, “Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk,” which was famously condemned by the Stalin regime and banned in the Soviet Union for almost 30 years.
The performance is free and open to the public.
