WARSAW, Poland (AP) _ A gas explosion in a high-rise apartment building in the Baltic port of Gdansk killed four people and injured 33 today, police said.

The explosion occurred shortly after a resident reported a gas leak in the building, authorities said.

Four people were killed and 33 were injured, said Marian Prekop, regional police chief. Eleven of the injured were hospitalized, said police spokesman Slawomir Michal Rudnicki.

The blast destroyed the bottom three floors of the 11-story building. Fears that the structure would collapse hindered rescuers.
