Tribute to Diana before England-Moldova game
WEMBLEY, England (AP) _ After singing along to a recording of Elton John’s revised ``Candle in the Wind,″ fans at Wembley Stadium observed a minute of silence in Princess Diana’s memory before England’s 4-0 victory over Moldova on Wednesday night.
It was the first major sports event in England since Diana’s funeral Saturday.
The tribute began 15 minutes before the game when 77,000 fans stood in the northwest London stadium _ thousands holding candles _ and accompanied John’s recording of the song, which he played at the funeral.
One fan held the English flag high over his head with ``We love you Diana″ written across the heart of the white field. Other fans waved English and British flags and some carried bouquets of flowers to the match.
At the request of England coach Glenn Hoddle, players on both teams wore wore black ribbons sewn onto their shirts with black armbands on each sleeve.
