FUKUOKA, Japan (AP) _ The United States fell out of medal contention after losing 10-4 to Spain on Tuesday in men's water polo at the swimming world championships.

Spain, the 1998 world champion, had three goals from Daniel Ballart. The United States trailed 5-1 in the first half.

``We gave away too many counterattacks in the first half,'' U.S. captain Wolf Wigo said.

The United States is 1-3 in Group C. Also out of the running for a medal are Australia, Kazakstan and Slovakia.

The top two teams from each four-team group advance to the semifinals.
