French First Lady Undergoes Surgery
PARIS (AP) _ French first lady Danielle Mitterrand underwent cardiovascular surgery Friday, and aides said the operation went smoothly.
No details were released about the reason for the surgery at Broussais Hospital in Paris or about Mrs. Mitterrand’s prognosis.
Mrs. Mitterrand, 69, was absent from the traditional Bastille Day garden party Thursday at the Elysee Palace, the official residence of President Francois Mitterrand.
She also did not accompany her husband on his official visit to South Africa in early July.
As president of France-Libertes, a humanitarian and human rights foundation, Mrs. Mitterrand has maintained a high profile, compared to previous first ladies, since her husband was elected in 1981.
