Rock used to break into cell phone store; drunk driver arrested after causing car crash: Berea police blotter

Breaking & entering, North Rocky River Drive: Someone broke into City Cell, 825 North Rocky River, at about 6:30 a.m. Aug. 4 and stole several iPhones and cell phone screens.

A rock was used to smash the business’s glass front door. A pedestrian heard an alarm sounding and called police. When police arrived, they found three plastic cell phone covers and a piece of a cell phone outside the store.

Security video showed a rock and glass sliding across the floor of City Cell at 6:23 a.m. A person whose face was hidden by a hoodie entered. The person spent about 1 minute and 30 seconds inside the store, then ran out the front door.

Operating a vehicle under the influence, North Rocky River Drive: An Olmsted Falls man, 28, was arrested at about 11:45 p.m. Aug. 3 after the Nissan Sentra he was driving hit a GMC Terrain.

No one was injured in the crash. The victim said she was driving on North Rocky River and had stopped in the left-turn lane at Karen Drive. She was waiting for traffic to pass so she could turn onto Karen.

The woman said the Nissan, traveling in the opposite direction, swerved left of center and hit her vehicle. A witness, whose vehicle was stopped in the left-turn lane behind the woman’s GMC, backed up the woman’s story.

The Olmsted Falls man blamed the woman for the crash, saying it was her GMC that went left of center and hit his car. Police noticed the man’s eyes were bloodshot and his speech was slurred. He swayed back and forth, and he smelled like alcohol. He failed field sobriety tests.

Carrying a concealed weapon-marijuana paraphernalia possession, Eastland Road: A Berea man, 48, was arrested at about 8:30 p.m. Aug. 3 after police caught him driving with a loaded handgun without a permit.

Police had stopped the man’s Jeep Patriot after seeing him turn without signaling. The man placed his keys on the hood of the Jeep and stuck his hands out the window, as if he were surrendering.

Police spotted a pipe in the man’s vehicle, and later found that it contained marijuana residue. The man admitted having a handgun in his glove compartment.

Disorderly conduct, Front Street: A Berea man, 61, was arrested at about 1:15 p.m. Aug. 6 after he fell off his bicycle and urinated on himself.

The man was drunk. He told police that he had consumed “only” six whiskey shots at Zach’s Steakhouse on West Bagley Road .

Police offered the man a ride home, loading his bike into their cruiser. When they arrived at the apartment complex where the man said he lived, two tenants told police the man had not lived there for months.

The man was unable to tell police where he really lived so they took him to the police department. The man urinated on himself again in the booking room. He was taken to Strongsville jail to sober up.

Theft, Shelley Parkway: A Taurus .38SPL revolver was stolen between 9 a.m. and 9:45 p.m. Aug. 1 from a car.

The victim was uncertain whether the weapon was stolen while his car was parked outside B.J.’s Wholesale Club in Middleburg Heights between 9-10 a.m. or when the car was parked in his driveway. He was uncertain whether he had locked the car.

Theft, Grand Street: Police hope to identify a male who stole a pack of Black and Mild cigars from Berea Beverage, 7 West Grand Street.

The male was in the store about 10 minutes before asking a cashier for the cigars. When the cashier placed the cigars on the counter, the male grabbed them and ran out of the store without paying.

Operating a vehicle under the influence, Prospect Street: A Strongsville man was arrested at about 1:30 a.m. Aug. 5 after police found him drunk in the Berea Fire Department driveway, attempting to change a flat tire on his Lexus.

The man told police he had just left his 40-year high school reunion. He failed field sobriety tests.

Marijuana possession, East Bridge Street: A Berea man, 19, was arrested at about 9:15 p.m. Aug. 1 after police noticed him puffing a marijuana cigar while driving.

After police stopped the man’s car, he admitted smoking marijuana. Police found three bags of marijuana, a plastic container with hashish oil, a marijuana pipe and a digital scale in the man’s car.
