Three films offer great entertainment

January 10, 2019

Movies & More reviewer John Gillispie shares his thoughts on the three PG-rated films — “Green Book,” “Aquaman” and “Holmes & Watson” — he watched over the holiday break.

Adding to my enjoyment of the holiday season was the chance to see three films at the theater while I had some extra time away from work. The films I saw were “Green Book,” “Aquaman” and “Holmes & Watson.”

Although I was prepared for some goofy comedy with “Holmes & Watson,” I have to say I was disappointed in the film that had some humorous moments, but seemed to trap Will Ferrell with an unfunny Sherlock.

Ferrell and John C. Reilly, who played Dr. Watson, have a great record as a comedy team, but I don’t think “Holmes & Watson” will add much to their comedy credentials.

“Aquaman” was certainly a spectacle of special effects and featured a nice role for Nicole Kidman as the mother of Arthur/Aquaman (Jason Momoa).

This entertaining movie gives us the backstory for DC’s superhero Aquaman and offers good roles for Amber Heard as Mera, Willem Dafoe as a mentor to Aquaman and Patrick Wilson as Aquaman’s half-brother Orm.

Of the three films I saw during the holidays, “Green Book” was my favorite. This movie took me on an emotional journey based on a true story of two men who form a friendship during a concert tour.

Viggo Mortensen as Tony Lip and Mahershala Ali as Don Shirley are both extremely good in their roles. Linda Cardellini as Dolores also gives a fine performance in “Green Book.”

In the film, which is set in the 1960s, Tony drives musician Don Shirley to concert appearances in the South.

The movie’s title refers to a book offering information to African-American travelers on places where they would be welcome to dine or book hotel accommodations during this time period.

“Green Book” offers great acting performances and an important message about the power of friendship.

John Gillispie is the public relations director for the Huntington Museum of Art.
