Papan Conviction Upheld in France

October 21, 1999

PARIS (AP) _ France’s highest court today upheld the conviction of Maurice Papon, the former Vichy official who has fled France rather than face prison for his role in sending Jews to Nazi death camps.

The Court of Cassation ruled that Papon lost his right of appeal by failing to report to prison as required before today’s hearing. Under French law, the court ruling automatically confirms the conviction.
