NTSB: CRASH THAT KILLED TROY GENTRY DUE TO PILOT ERROR AND MAINTENANCE ISSUE
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Pilot error and an overlooked maintenance issue contributed to the helicopter crash that killed Montgomery Gentry singer Troy Gentry last year, according to the National Transportation Safety Board. Its final report finds that pilot James Evan Robinson ignored experts on the ground and cut the engine too soon after experiencing trouble several minutes after takeoff. Investigators say Robinson cut the engine a quarter to a half-mile out, rather than over the runway. The report says the maintenance staff also failed to rig the throttle control assembly before the flight. Robinson was giving Gentry a ride before Montgomery Gentry’s concert in Medford, New Jersey, in September of last year when the helicopter crashed in nearby woods.

DRAKE IS NUMBER-ONE STREAMING ARTIST ON SPOTIFY AND APPLE MUSIC, TOP ARTIST ON BILLBOARD
NEW YORK (AP) — Drake is the top act on Spotify and on Apple Music for 2018. Both platforms say Drake’s “Scorpion” is the most-streamed album, and “God’s Plan” is the most-streamed single. “Beerbongs and Bentleys” by Post Malone was the second most-streamed album on both platforms. However, if you look at the year-end charts for Billboard, which includes streaming and sales, Drake does not have the same dominance. While he is Billboard’s top artist of 2018 and “God’s Plan” is the top Hot 100 song, the top Billboard album of the year is “Reputation” by Taylor Swift, with “Scorpion” in second and “Beerbongs and Bentleys” in third.

HALESTORM EXPLAINS HOW THEY GOT THIS FAR
NASHVILLE (AP) — Halestorm’s secret to getting along: they’re all interested in different aspects of the band. Singer Lzzy (LIZ’-ee) Hale says guitarist Joe Hottinger and she are interested in the politics of the business, while drummer Arejay (AR’-jay) Hale and bassist Josh Smith are more into the creative side. Hale says it’s worked for 15 years and they try not to question it too much. Besides, it’s whatever Lzzy wants. Hale jokes she holds the veto card but she rarely ever uses it.

PRIMUS FEATURED IN NEW PINBALL MACHINE
CHICAGO (AP) — Perhaps you didn’t know you wanted to play pinball to “Jerry Was A Race Car Driver” and “My Name Is Mud,” but now it’s out there. Stern Pinball has created a Primus pinball machine that plays 13 songs, as well as in-game audio recorded by frontman Les Claypool. The machine is limited to 100 units, and each one is autographed by all three band members. Claypool says he’s made records, published a novel, directed videos and feature films and collaborated with his musical heroes, but it wasn’t until he was immortalized in a pinball machine that he felt that he’s made the big time. The machine sells for just under $8,000.

GALACTIC BUYS TIPITINA’S
NEW ORLEANS (AP) — The five members of the band Galactic are now the proud owners of one of New Orleans’ most famous music club. The band closed a deal Friday to buy Tipitina’s from local real estate developer Roland Von Kurnatowski and his wife, Mary, who have owned it since 1997. The deal nearly fell apart several times, and the band raided their savings and retirement accounts to buy the club. Drummer Stanton Moore says they don’t want to change Tipitina’s but make it better. Moore says they intend to keep much of the current staff. He says Tipitina’s has been their home away from home for years and now they actually own it.
