Man charged in woman’s death
WICHITA, Kan. (AP) _ A 29-year-old man was charged Tuesday in the death of a mother of four who was run over repeatedly by a truck, police said.
Derwin Stewart of Wichita was charged with second-degree murder and aggravated assault in the weekend death of Sandra Mason.
Stewart went to Mrs. Mason’s house uninvited Saturday to visit a cousin who lives there, and an argument broke out when he was asked to leave, said police Capt. Paul Dotson.
Mrs. Mason’s family and friends watched as Stewart rammed his truck into her as he left the property, then backed up and ran over her again in front of her home, Dotson said.
Mrs. Mason’s husband tried to stop Stewart and punctured his back tires with a knife, Dotson said. Stewart was arrested after two flat tires stopped the truck a few blocks away.
Stewart has an April 1995 conviction for drunken driving, and his driver’s license was suspended in March for lack of liability insurance, according to Kansas Motor Vehicle Records.
