One Rescued, Four Dead, Nine Missing in French Copter Crash

February 12, 1986

TOULON, France (AP) _ Officials say one person has been rescued but four are known dead and nine remain missing from the wreck of a French naval helicopter that crashed into the Mediterranean Sea near Corsica.

The only known survivor of the Monday accident, First Mate Christian Grossmann, told authorities the engines suddenly failed while the craft was flying from Hyeres in southern France to a military base in Aspretto, Corsica.

The Super-Frelon was on a transport mission when it crashed about 55 miles north of the island. Rescue efforts were hampered Tuesday by high winds. The helicopter carried a crew of four and 10 French sailors.
