9-Year-Old Boy Shot in Head During Father’s Day Dinner
TAMPA, FLa. (AP) _ A 9-year-old boy had just taken his seat at a Father’s Day family dinner when he slumped suddenly - a bullet lodged in his skull.
″You are not even safe in our own back yard,″ said the victim’s mother, Christine Philpott.
After surgery Sunday to remove the slug, Dale Philpott was alert, talking with his parents and complaining that he was hungry.
″It certainly is a mystery,″ said Hillsborough sheriff’s Detective Rich Figueredo. ″We have no idea at this point whether it was accidental or deliberate.″
Twenty family members had gathered on an open-air porch in the back of the boy’s grandparents’ home for dinner.
″We weren’t sure what was wrong with him until we looked at the back of his head and saw the hole,″ said Mary Lou Heyer, the boy’s great aunt.
At Humana Hospital Brandon, X-rays revealed a bullet lodged in his skull.
″We are real lucky. Another centimeter and the doctor said Dale would be dead,″ Mrs. Philpott said.
