Kurentovanje festival, ‘Slovenian Mardi Gras,’ gives winter a scare

CLEVELAND, Ohio – A cold winter day might not seem the best time for an outdoor parade, but it’s the driving force behind the ever-growing Kurentovanje festival in Cleveland’s St. Clair-Superior neighborhood.

The festival is a Slovenian Mardi Gras, a celebration in the days leading up to Lent. It gets its name from its most prominent characters, the towering, fuzzy “Kurent” monsters whose job is to scare winter away.

The mythical monsters led the parade on Saturday, climaxing what began as a grassroots gathering in 2013 and has grown into one of Cleveland’s biggest winter events, a week of activities featuring music, food, crafts and a 5K.
