CLEVELAND (AP) _ Jim Riggleman, fired as manager of the Chicago Cubs after last season, said Thursday he has joined the Cleveland Indians coaching staff under new manager Charlie Manuel.

Riggleman told WGN radio in Chicago that he will be either a bench coach or third-base coach for the Indians, who hired Manuel earlier this week to replace Mike Hargrove.

Riggleman said the Indians were waiting to put their coaching staff together before announcing his hiring.

Cleveland GM John Hart was en route to Arizona for a the general manager's meeting and unavailable for comment Thursday night. Calls to the Indians' media relations staff were not returned.

The 46-year-old Riggleman has a 486-598 in seven seasons as a manager with San Diego and Chicago. The Cubs fired him in early October after the team went 67-95 and finished last in the NL Central.

Riggleman was one of several candidates interviewed for the Cleveland managing job, which became vacant when Hargrove was fired after the Indians blew a 2-0 lead in the first round of the AL playoffs against Boston.

The Indians hired Manuel, their former hitting coach, as the franchise's 37th manager Monday. So far only bullpen coach Luis Isaac is on Manuel's staff.

Riggleman also talked with Seattle and San Diego about possible coaching jobs.
