NYC police fatally wound man who fired at officers
NEW YORK (AP) — New York City police say officers shot and killed a man who fired a gun at their vehicle as they looked for a shooting suspect in Queens.
Chief of Department Terence Monahan says officers exited their unmarked car and returned fire, striking the man in the head at around 2:20 a.m. Friday. He was pronounced dead at Jamaica Hospital.
Monahan says the man fit the description of a suspect in an earlier shooting that left a 26-year-old man hospitalized in critical condition.
The chief says officers were searching an area about eight blocks south of the Long Island Rail Road’s Jamaica Station when the suspect saw them and started firing. No officers were hit.
A handgun was found at the scene. The officers were taken to a hospital for evaluation.
