Eagles celebrate homecoming with win over Clinton
JEFFERSON — Senior Ryan Brost threw two touchdown passes and ran for the other two scores as Jefferson beat Clinton 27-8 on homecoming Friday night.
Jefferson (4-2 in the Rock Valley Conference) trailed 8-0 in the first quarter, then scored 27 unanswered points.
“We turned it over on the 15-yard line,” Jefferson football coach Steve Gee said. “When you give somebody a 15-yard field, it’s tough to stop them. From there, they moved the ball a little bit, but we embraced the bend but don’t break philosophy and got some fourth down stops.”
Brost threw a 22-yard TD pass to junior receiver Korbin Simdon with 13 seconds left in the first quarter to trim the lead to 8-6.
The Eagles took the lead for good with 25 seconds left in the first half on Brost’s 19-yard scoring toss to junior receiver Connor Salerno. Brost ran in the two-point conversion as the Eagles took a 14-8 lead into halftime.
Brost scored from 1 yard out with 8:49 left in the third quarter to extend the lead to 20-8, then capped the scoring with a 32-yard TD run with 6:18 left in the game.
“That was just a draw,” Gee said. “We had so much success outside on option. They kept going wider and wider. He had a wide open lane and just had to make one guy miss.”
Jefferson finished with 4 yards of total offense. Brost completed 14-of-17 passes for 157 yards and two touchdowns and rushed 12 times for 98 yards and two scores.
“Our completion percentage was great,” Gee said. “We wanted to put our good athletes in space and let them make plays for us. Brost really got that done for us.”
Salerno had one run for 67 yards and caught four passes for 56 yards. Junior running back Jeffery Zeh rushed 10 times for 50 yards and added three catches for 43 yards.
Senior receiver and defensive back Ben Sukow had six catches for 48 yards and added four solo tackles and five assisted tackles.
Junior linebacker Dean Neff led the Eagles defense with eight solo tackles and six assisted tackles including two sacks. Senior linebackers Nathan Hebbe and Justin Cusack each added four solo tackles and one sack each.
Clinton fell to 1-5 on the season.
Jefferson travels to face Beloit Turner next Friday.
