US-NKOREA SUMMIT-SUCCESS AS FAILURE? - The nightmare scenario going into the second summit between Donald Trump and Kim Jong Un this week isn’t “fire and fury” and millions dead. For some observers, the real danger is that Trump and Kim will actually succeed with what they trumpet as a blockbuster deal that could instead push allies Seoul and Washington apart and provide an opening for North Korea to pursue its long-cherished goal of dominating the Korean Peninsula. That could have the effect of protecting the rule of its Kim dynasty _ all without addressing the North’s hundreds of short and mid-range nuclear armed missiles aimed at Seoul, Tokyo and other parts of Asia. US-NKOREA SUMMIT – AP EXPLAINS: HOW TO VERIFY - Much hinges on the U.S. insistence that North Korea make a complete declaration of its nuclear and weapon facilities, and then allow in inspectors to verify that declaration. The reality is that would be a target list. Even if North Korea were somehow convinced to provide one, following through on verification would be a massive, years-long undertaking that would take as much patience as work. A look at the North’s possible programs and what verification would entail. By Hyung-jin Kim. TEXT/PHOTO

US-NKOREA SUMMIT-ENDING THE WAR - Speculation is growing that President Donald Trump may try to convince North Korean leader Kim Jong Un to commit to denuclearization by giving him something he wants more than almost anything else _ an announcement to formally end the Korean War. Such an announcement would undoubtedly grab the headlines and be right in line with Trump’s opposition to “forever wars.” But it could also open up a whole new set of problems for Washington.
