Five Die in Poland Storms

July 17, 2001

WARSAW, Poland (AP) _ Severe storms swept across Poland overnight, killing five people and injuring 16, officials said Tuesday.

A couple walking on the beach Monday night in the Baltic sea town of Karwia, some 250 miles north of Warsaw, were killed by lightning, said Witold Maziarz, a spokesman for Poland’s fire brigades.

A 76-year-old woman was killed by a falling roof in central Poland while, in the southern city of Katowice, a 38-year-old man was killed when he was struck by a broken power line, Maziarz said. He had no immediate details about the fifth fatality.

Emergency services were in action in about 1,500 places across Poland, clearing downed trees, securing damaged buildings and pumping out water from flooded houses.
