Ann Battelle Wins Gold in Moguls
MEIRINGEN, Switzerland (AP) _ Ann Battelle of Steamboat Springs, Colo., a three-time Olympic skier, overcame soft snow to win the gold medal in moguls at the freestyle World Championships on Wednesday.
The 31-year-old Battelle, who never skied moguls until after she graduated from Middlebury in 1989, received 24.38 points from the judges for her run in bright sunshine. Kari Traa of Norway took the silver medal with 24.12 and local Corinne Bodmer of Switzerland was third (23.81).
Battelle, who considered retirement last summer, was selected an athlete of the month by the U.S. Olympic Committee on Tuesday.
Finns swept all the medals in the men’s moguls with Olympic silver medalist Janne Lahtela winning with 26.59 points. Lauri Lassila was second with 26.12 and bronze medalist was Sami Mustonen at 26.07.
