Five Injured in Runaway Carriage

May 8, 1986

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) _ A horse pulling a carriage full of tourists bolted on a downtown street, and five people were injured, police said today.

One of the passengers, William Herr, 64, of Seattle, was in serious condition at the Regional Medical Center after being thrown from the carriage as it overturned Wednesday night.

Jake Schoor, owner of Carriage Tours, said the horse bolted and ran down a sidewalk near the Peabody Hotel after sideswiping a car stopped at a traffic light.

The driver of the carriage, Tammy O’Neal, held onto the horse’s reins and managed to stop the animal after it had run about 50 yards.

Ms. O’Neal was reported in stable condition at St. Joseph Hospital today. Three other passengers, all of Seattle, were treated for minor injuries at a hospital and released.
