Archbishop Tutu Heartened by Duke’s Defeat With PM-Duke-What’s Next, Bjt

November 18, 1991

ATLANTA (AP) _ Anglican Archbishop Desmond Tutu of South Africa welcomed David Duke’s defeat in the Louisiana governor’s race, saying a victory by the former Ku Klux Klan leader would have heartened champions of apartheid.

″I want to congratulate the American public for being sensible,″ Tutu said Sunday.

″Those who have supported apartheid and racism would have felt a great deal more like being in the seventh heaven of delight if he had won,″ the church leader said. ″They could say, ’You see, it’s happening over there.‴

The 1984 Nobel Peace Prize winner is in Atlanta on sabbatical.
