District 2 Baseball Championship Previews: May 27

CLASS 6A (2) Williamsport (16-4) vs. (1) Hazleton Area (17-3) When: 4 p.m. Where: PNC Field Admission: $7 for adults, $4 for students At stake: A berth in the Class 6A state playoffs Up next: The winner advances to the state playoffs to face the No. 4 seed from District 1, either Garnet Valley, Bensalem, Souderton or Methacton. How they got here: Hazleton Area defeated West Scranton, 5-3. Williamsport defeated Delaware Valley, 2-1. Breakdown: With the inclusion of Williamsport in the tournament, this is a subregional. Should Williamsport win the title, Hazleton Area would next play Delaware Valley for the District 2 title at a site and time to be announced. Hazleton Area is armed with a pair of front line starters in Brady Antolick and Frank DeGaetano. Both pitched in the semifinal win over West Scranton. Alex Amentler has been a key part of the offense, hitting .439 with six extra-base hits and 14 RBIs. DeGaetano is hitting .365 with 16 RBIs, while Gavin McGowan is batting .333 with 19 runs scored and six doubles. DeGaetano has a 1.36 ERA, while Antolick has a 1.96 ERA. CLASS 4A (6) Scranton Prep (10-9) vs. (1) Dallas (16-6) When: 1:30 p.m. Where: PNC Field Admission: $7 for adults, $4 for students At stake: A berth in the Class 4A state playoffs Up next: The winner advances to the state playoffs to face the No. 2 seed from District 3. The District 3 finals are scheduled for May 30. How they got here: Scranton Prep defeated Wyoming Area, 3-1, and Valley View, 10-5. Dallas defeated Berwick, 9-2, and Honesdale, 4-3. Breakdown: Dallas pushed across a run in the bottom of the seventh to reach another district final with a one-run victory over Honesdale. ... The Mountaineers lost a 1-0 heartbreaker in last year’s final against Valley View. ... Alex Kapral has developed into the ace of the staff this year and pitched well in the opening round win over Berwick, making it into the seventh inning before his pitch count forced him out of the game. ... Center fielder Darren Kerdesky has been hot of late, homering in back-to-back games during the last week of the season. ... Infielder Mike Luksic is headed to the University of Delaware next year to play baseball. ... He was the starting third baseman on the 2017 state championship team. Kerdesky is hitting .359 with three home runs. Beaudyn Lewis is batting .321. Jake Connolly brings a .284 average into the final. Kapral is 4-1 with a 2.12 ERA, while Jake Shaver is 4-2 with a 2.17 ERA. ... Scranton Prep is led by a pair of Division 1 recruits in Noah Granet (Princeton) and Vince Cimini (Boston College). Cimini leads the Cavs with a .483 batting average. He has two home runs and 25 RBIs. Granet is hitting .431 with 13 RBIs and eight doubles. Rocco Valvano is hitting .317.
