SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) _ Three men with shotguns and pistols entered a hospital room and killed a patient and his bodyguard in what appeared to be drug-related murders, police reported Tuesday.

Police Cmdr. Ivan Catala said the men wore hoods, entered the Bayamon Regional Hospital in suburban San Juan through the morgue at about 10 p.m. Monday, killed the victims and escaped.

He identified the slain men as Herminio Torres Quiles, 33, who had been hospitalized for a bullet wound in the stomach, and his bodyguard Angel M. Rosario, 30.

Catala said drug charges were pending against Torres and detectives believed the killings were linked to trafficking.

Torres was wounded July 20 in a gunfight between two groups of people at a housing project in Bayamon and his companions fled, leaving him behind in a car. Police found a pistol and a small quantity of drugs in the car, according to Catala.

He said Torres would not cooperate with investigators and refused police protection, saying he had ''his own laws'' for dealing with enemies.
