American Legion Golf Tournament Raises Money For A Great Cause

The Wilkes-Barre Twp. American Legion Post 815 will sponsor the third annual Ray Majikes Golf Tournament in memory of Skylar Elizabeth Saranchuk at 9 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 15, at the Wilkes-Barre Municipal Golf Course. Format is captain and crew. Cost is $85 per person/$340 per team. There will be a 50/50 raffle, longest drive, closest to the pin, skins and pot of gold. Hole sponsorships are available for $25, $50, $75 and $100 which includes a round of golf, beverages and a meal afterward. Music will be provided by DJ Winkie and Stonecat Billie. Registration will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. Wednesdays, Aug. 29 and Sept. 5 at the post home, 54 Chestnut St. Colors and taps will be presented immediately before tee off by the American Legion Post 815. W-B Twp. community yard sale The ninth annual township community-wide yard sale will be held from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 11. There will be more than 40 yard sales throughout the township. Participants will have balloons in front of their homes on the day of the yard sale to make their yard sale stand out and easier to find by prospective buyers. Yard sale lists and a street map can be obtained at 699 Metcalf St., 782 Keating St., 706 E. Northampton St. and 226 Nicholson St. Rain date is 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 18. Public is welcome. You may even find a “treasure” at one of the yard sales. Township all class reunion planned Invitations have been sent for the annual Wilkes-Barre Twp. High School all class reunion which will be held Saturday, Sept. 29, at the township fire hall, Watson Street. Coordinator Bob Weiss extends an invitation to all graduates to the annual reunion, whether they graduated from the township high school or from another high school. The classes from 1953, 1958, 1963 and 1968 will be honored. If you didn’t attend last year’s reunion but plan on attending this year, contact Weiss at 570-696-2279 to have your invitation mailed to you. Deadline for reservations is Sept. 22. Senior citizens news At the recent senior citizens’ bingo party, 50-50 winners were Natalie Aleo, Mary Petyo and Ann Galle. Special game winners were Rita Meshko, Helen Novak and Ann Galle. Members honored Barbara Aleo on the occasion of her birthday. Anyone wishing to join the seniors’ group is asked to attend any of their weekly Wednesday bingo parties which start at 10:30 a.m. in the township municipal building’s community room. Yearly dues are $6. Membership is also open to any non-township resident who wishes to join the group. Bus transportation will be provided to any township resident who otherwise has no means of transportation to the municipal building. The township senior citizens’ 44th annual summer outing will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 19, at the Wilkes-Barre Twp. Settlement Camp in Bear Creek Twp. Sue Pohutski, Helen Novak and Bernadine Elick are in charge. The meal will be catered by KL Catering. The day will be filled with several enjoyable activities and a raffle. Prizes will be awarded to all winners. Entertainment will be provided by township accordionist Bill Kuklewicz. Cost for non-members to attend the outing is $20 per person. Bus transportation will be provided to the Settlement Camp from the township fire house. Deadline for reservations is Sunday, Aug. 12. Bingo players are asked to bring their markers and nickels with them. The seniors will also attend the Bloomsburg Fair on Monday, Sept. 24, for Senior Citizens’ Day. Our Lady of Hope news CCD registrations will take place Saturday, Aug. 25, following the 4 p.m. Mass and Sunday, Aug. 26 following the 9 a.m. and 11:15 a.m. Masses in the Marymount Parish Center. Students who are registering for the first time must bring a copy of their baptismal certificate. Eighth grade students eligible for confirmation must register at this time. For information, contact June Swida at 570-825-4966. CCD classes will begin at 10 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 9, in the parish center. The CCD program is in need of one instructor. If you would like to help with the CCD program, contact June Swida or the Rev. John Terry to volunteer your services. The social concerns committee will meet in the rectory meeting room at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 23. The Christian Women of Our Lady of Hope will meet at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 22, in the rectory to further plans for the annual turkey bingo which will be held on Sunday, Sept. 23, in the Marymount Parish Center on South Hancock Street. All women of the parish are invited to attend. Altar servers are needed. If your child is interested in becoming an altar server, call Maggie at 570-899-8104. All prospective altar servers must have received their First Holy Communion. Donations would be appreciated for the parish annual fall festival raffle. Parishioners are also asked to put their theme basket together for the parish annual fall festival. St. John B.C. Church news St. John’s Church needs volunteers for their Sunday socials. The guild will provide the coffee and cakes. A sign-up sheet is posted in back of the church. If there are no volunteers, there will be no socials. Donations would be greatly appreciated for the renovations recently made to the parish hall kitchen. To make a donation, mail it to St. John B.C. Church, 526 Church St., Wilkes-Barre Twp.
