State police, Ludington PD investigating infant death
The Michigan State Police, with the assistance of the Ludington Police Department, are investigating the death of an infant.
The state police, in a press release to the media, stated that Mason-Oceana County Central Dispatch received a call regarding a 2-month-old infant suffering from a medical emergency at a Ludington residence on March 22.
The infant was initially transported to Spectrum Health Ludington Hospital by Life EMS, and later transferred via Aero-Med to Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital in Grand Rapids. The infant remained on life-support in Grand Rapids until its death on Friday, April 26.
According to the release, Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital Center for Child Protection determined the child’s injuries were non-accidental.
An autopsy was conducted by the Kent County Medical Examiner’s Office, and a report is pending.
The Ludington Police Department made the initial complaint and turned the case to Michigan State Police, according to Ludington Police Department Chief Mark Barnett.
The matter remains under investigation.
