Toddler Chokes to Death on Chili Powder; Man Charged
ALBANY, Ore. (AP) _ A man has been charged with murdering a toddler who choked to death on chili powder.
A grand jury was to convene next Friday to consider charges against 22- year-old Joseph Lee Teigen, who was arrested Feb. 29 after 22-month-old Johnathan Lee Babb died at Lebanon Community Hospital.
Paramedics found the child not breathing, with a red powder around his mouth. An autopsy Monday showed the boy choked on chili powder.
Teigen and his wife lived in Sweet Home, in western Oregon, with the child’s mother, Angela Babb, and her three children.
He was arraigned Monday in District Court and charged with murder.
Deputy Linn County District Attorney Susan Tripp said the grand jury session was delayed to give police more time to gather evidence. The grand jury will consider whether to charge Teigen with first degree murder or aggravated murder, a capital offense.
