Take succeeding steps to tame opioid scourge
The first step toward resolving a problem is to recognize it.
Perhaps Kankakee County, and the nation as a whole, was slow to recognize the paralyzing grip opioid addiction has placed on our society. But the county endured a record 56 overdose deaths in 2017, a number so high even President Trump took notice.
Now that the scourge has caught everyone’s attention, it’s time to take the succeeding steps to remedy it.
A big stride in that direction will take place Thursday, when a community forum labeled “Inside Opioid Addiction in Kankakee County’’ will take place at Bradley-Bourbonnais Community High School (see advertisement below).
The forum will include participation from various organizations as well as people who have firsthand knowledge of just how detrimental opioid abuse can be for both the user and those they are surrounded by.
Make every effort to attend, and don’t be fooled for a moment. There’s no one who rightly can say, “It doesn’t affect me.’’ It affects all of us, and it will take all to hopefully one day bring it under control.
