Cyprus denies alleged child abduction attempt at hotel

June 19, 2015

NICOSIA, Cyprus (AP) — Cyprus’ deputy government spokesman has denied allegations by British holidaymakers of an attempted abduction of their children at their hotel.

Viktoras Papadopoulos Friday called the heavy media play the allegations got in Britain “unnecessary and completely unfounded.”

Papadopoulos says police found nothing to incriminate a 19-year-old Bulgarian man who British tourists said had approached their children and videotaped them with his mobile telephone.

He says a search of the man’s home and telephone as well as interviews with the British tourists who made the allegation turned up nothing suspicious.

The visitors were staying at a hotel in Protaras on the Mediterranean island’s southeastern coast.

Papadopoulos said Cyprus is one of the world’s safest tourist destinations and its police force is highly trained in the protection of children.
