Carve out time for Empty Bowls
The Channel One Regional Food Bank’s Empty Bowls event calls attention to the hunger that many Rochester residents face every day.
Chuck Grimm, the president of the Zumbro Valley Woodturners, saw an opportunity to put down more roots in the community.
The local woodturning club had been involved with charity projects before, but the Empty Bowls Fundraiser – which traditionally provides donors with ceramic bowls in which to eat simple soup-and-bread meals – didn’t seem like a perfect fit.
However, a group member who knew about the event insisted that it would be a good partnership.
When the group reached out, Channel One was happy for the offer, and just a couple of weeks ago, they received boxes of smooth dishes to add to the donation tables.
“We like to get involved with charities and activities that we find interesting or are valuable,” Grimm said. “I take it that it helps quite a bit.”
For the last two years, the woodturning club has donated 10 to 15 wooden bowls to the organization.
Keep an eye out for the bowls – best used for decoration or holding fruit, Grimm said – at this year’s event.
