PHOENIX (AP) _ Edgar Martinez hit a three-run home run and three other Seattle Mariners hit two-run shots on Thursday to contribute to a 14-8 exhibition drubbing of the Oakland Athletics.

A’s right-hander Bob Welch took the brunt of the barrage, giving up three two-run home runs, to Ken Griffey Jr. in the first inning and to Greg Briley and Alvin Davis in the five-run second inning.

Welch, who is scheduled to start the second game of the regular season on Tuesday against the Minnesota Twins, gave up eight runs over four innings, seven of them earned, to run his exhibition record to 0-3. He’s given up 21 earned runs in 10 2-3 innings.

Felix Jose led the A’s with three hits and two RBI.

Martinez hit his home run off A’s reliever Reese Lambert in the sixth.

Left-hander Randy Johnson started and pitched five innings of three-hit shutout ball for the Mariners, who improved to 7-6.

The A’s, losers of seven of their last eight games and 4-9 overall, left Arizona for Oakland after the game, and are scheduled to begin the three-game Bay Bridge exhibition series against the San Francisco Giants Friday night at Candlestick Park.
