Eugene E. Salzwedel

Eugene E. Salzwedel, 85, of Watertown, passed away on Wednesday, Aug. 29, 2018, at Marquardt Health Center in Watertown.

A memorial service will be held on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church of Watertown with the Rev. Peter Wells presiding. Family and friends may gather at the church from 1:30 p.m. until the time of service. Military rites will take place following the service. Burial will be held at a later date. Memorials may be directed to St. Mark’s School.

Eugene Edward Salzwedel was born on June 27, 1933, to Alma (nee Salzwedel) and Fredrick Salzwedel. Eugene attended West Milwaukee High School. He later joined the United States Marines, serving in the Korean War. Eugene and the former Donna DeBack married on Oct. 29, 1955, at Nain Lutheran Church in Milwaukee. Eugene was employed as a truck driver for Michael’s Trucking Company, but was later employed by the Watertown School District as a school bus driver. Eugene loved kids and helping his community. He spent much of his free time listening to music, doing crossword puzzles, building model cars and watching the Packers, basketball, NASCAR and Brewers. He was also a member of American Legion Post 189.

Eugene is survived by his wife of 62 years, Donna Salzwedel; five children, Lee Salzwedel of Rome, Kim (the Rev. Dean) Zemple of Sullivan, Sue (Michael) Mastrostefano of North Prairie, Joel Salzwedel of Grand Marsh, Lisa Radix of Ixonia; 18 grandchildren, Nathan, Jeremy, Philip, Andrew, Christopher, Katie, Casey, Sara, Megan, Mary, Joseph, Delaine, Brooke, Kayleigh, Scarlett, Lauren, Nichole, Melissa; and 22 great-grandchildren. He is further survived by his sister, Lorraine Kimpel, as well as nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Fredrick and Alma; granddaughter Alissa; great-grandchildren, Emery, Brya, Bella; and brother, Willard Salzwedel.
