Fresno State 42, Long Beach State 14

FRESNO, Calif. (AP) _ Mark Barsotti threw three first-half touchdown passes Saturday night to lead Fresno State to a 42-14 Big West Conference victory over Long Beach State.

Fresno State (5-0 overall, 1-0 Big West) jumped out to a 21-0 lead in the first quarter on Lorenzo Neal’s 1-yard run and Barsotti’s touchdown passes of 3 yards to Marty Thompson and 13 yards to Kelvin Means.

Long Beach (1-5, 1-2) scored early in the second quarter on a 1-yard run by Charles Varrie.

Anthony Daigle scored on a 1-yard run midway through the second quarter to begin another Fresno surge. Seventeen seconds later, Barsotti tossed a 22-yard touchdown pass to Frank Jones, one play after a fumble recovery.

Daigle also scored on a 3-yard run in the third quarter.

Long Beach’s final score came on a 30-yard pass from Mike McCoy to Mark Seay early in the third quarter. McCoy completed just three of 16 passes for 56 yards.

Fresno State, which ran its home unbeaten streak to 26 games, beat Long Beach for the 10th straight time. The Bulldogs finished with 541 yards in total offense and limited Long Beach to just 172 yards.

Ron Rivers led Fresno State’s ground game with 133 yards in 13 carries.
