Woodland Lifts Panthers; Gauthier Sparks Nashoba

Ayer Shirley plated a run in each of the final two innings to earn a 2-1 season-opening victory over Clinton in high school baseball action on Wednesday.

In softball, Nashoba Tech nipped Parker Charter, 10-9, and Clinton easily handled Ayer Shirley, 22-10.


Ayer Shirley 2, Clinton 1

Ian Keene knocked in the tying run in the sixth and Michael Woodland drove in the game-winning run in the top of the seventh. Ayer Shirley had 5 hits.

Chris Rooney went the distance on the mound for the Panthers, allowing 4 hits, while striking out 9.

Nashoba Tech 9, Parker 3

Brandon Gauthier tossed 4 innings and struck out 10 for the win, and Casey Johnson went the final 3 innings and added 6 punchouts in the season opener for NT.

Johnson also went 2-for-3 at the plate with an RBI. DJ Fraser (1-for-3, 2 RBI), James Fitzgerald (2-for-4, 2 RBI) and Sean Archer (1-for-4, triple, 2 RBI) provided offensive contributions.

BC High 5, Lowell 4

The Red Raiders began the season with a narrow road loss to a strong BC High team.

Brendan DeMarco ripped a double for Lowell. Adding a hit each were Edgar Velazquez, Ray Velazquez and Thomas Hassett. Edgar Velazquez scored 2 runs, while Ray Velazquez drove in 2 runs.

George Grillakis tossed two strong innings of hitless relief.


Lincoln-Sudbury 3, Westford 0

Westford (0-2) fell by scores of 25-15, 25-19 and 25-16.

Patrick Ward had 5 kills for the Grey Ghosts, while Sion Daniel and Adam Scaramuzzo had 4 kills each.

Greater Lowell 3, PMA 0

Playing well offensively for the victorious Gryphons were senior setter and outside hitter Pedro DaSousa, and junior right side hitter Matt Medina.

Scores were 25-15, 25-12, 25-17.

Serving well were Montry Villavong and Eddie Lach. Defensively, senior Matt Barbosa was a standout for Greater Lowell Tech (1-1, 1-0 CAC).

Winchester 3, Chelmsford 0

The Lions fell to Winchester during a non-league match on the road.

Set scores were 25-17, 25-22, 25-18.

Levi Cass was outstanding for Chelmsford with 8 kills, 6 digs, 2 blocks and 2 aces. Liam McGinty compiled 5 kills and 2 blocks. Colin Connor contributed 2 aces and 5 digs.

Lexington 3, Billerica 0

Billerica lost in a hard-fought battle, as Lexington picked up wins of 25-21, 25-21 and 28-26.

Isaac Senkayo played big at the net for Billerica, while Ankeet Patel chipped in 5 kills.

Central Catholic 3, St. John’s 2

The Raiders topped the Shrewsbury school, 17-25, 23-25, 25-21, 25-9, 15-9 thanks to a spirited rally.

Kevin Stevenson tallied 12 kills and 4 blocks for Central (1-0). Dan Roberts added 8 kills and 4 aces. Also starring were Jack Roderick (22 assists), Alex Nadeau (30 digs) and John Day (12 service points).


Lincoln-Sudbury 13, Westford 4

The Grey Ghosts fell to Dual County League powerhouse Lincoln-Sudbury in Westford.

Westford received goals from Jason Bunyon, John Alfano, Pressly Mead and Cam Barisano. Nick Antes set up a goal. Craig Tucker finished with 14 saves.

Arl. Cath. 10, Lowell Catholic 7

Despite 2 goals, 2 assists and 8 groundballs from Rowan Ruggiero, the Crusaders were nipped.

Colin Gleason claimed a goal, 3 assists and 8 groundballs. Also starring were Mike Brodgon (10-for-18 faceoffs, 11 groundballs), James Giblin (2 goals), Christian Ruggiero (goal) and Mike Devita (goal).

Lowell 14, Gloucester 8

Brendan Tighe had 3 goals and 3 assists and Nate Jozokos went 18-for-26 on faceoffs to power Lowell to the victory.

Jack Frediani had 4 goals and an assist, while Owen Goulette had 3 goals and an assist for the Red Raiders. Aidan Finn chipped in 2 goals.


Lowell Catholic 13, Arl. Cath. 10

Senior Emily Jussaume tallied 9 goals and added an assist to power the Crusaders to the victory.

Senior captain Ali Dresser claimed 2 goals and 2 assists, while senior Cassidy Gilbride had a goal and assist. Morgan Bellavance (goal) and Caitie Heise (assist) also contributed.

Junior goalie Abbey Keefe made 23 saves for the Crusaders (2-0).

Reading 11, Central Catholic 10

Down 8-2 at halftime, Central made a spirited second-half comeback before falling just short.

Ciera Licare notched 5 goals and an assist, Grace Lyndon tallied 4 goals and Addison Jaromin scored once. Olivia DeLonais had 2 assists and Oliva Hamilton made 10 saves for Central (0-1).
