Macy’s E-Commerce, Mail Combining

CINCINNATI (AP) _ Federated Department Stores Inc. plans to combine Macy’s electronic commerce and direct mail operations.

Gradual changes are planned starting this fall until the new system is fully in place by Feb. 1, management said Tuesday.

The Macy’s By Mail catalog operation will be integrated into macys.com, with a combined merchandising, planning and support organization serving both businesses.

The goal is to make a selection of the same merchandise that can be bought in Macy’s stores available through a revamped Macy’s By Mail catalog, as well as online at macys.com, management said.

``We want the Macy’s brand to stand for the same thing whether the customer is in our stores, shopping online or through the catalog,″ said Jeffrey Sherman, chairman of Federated Direct, which also includes Bloomingdale’s By Mail, bloomingdales.com and the Fingerhut online retailer.

Federated, based in Cincinnati, has annual sales of about $17.7 billion. The company operates more than 400 department stores in 33 states under the names Bloomingdale’s, The Bon Marche, Burdines, Goldsmith’s, Lazarus, Macy’s, Rich’s and Stern’s.
