Zane Lanham, Huntington High Highlanders win WSAZ titles

HUNTINGTON — Zane Lanham from Huntington High was an individual champion and the Highlanders compiled the most points to claim the Class AAA team title Saturday at the conclusion of the 41st WSAZ Invitational wrestling tournament in Big Sandy Superstore Arena.

Team scoring was divided into classes, but wrestlers from all schools competed against each other.

Lanham decisioned Nate Kotsko from East Fairmont in the 182-pound finals, 7-1.

The Highlanders had 194.5 points to finish ahead of Class AAA runner-up Johnson Central with 176.5. Byron Pearce of Johnson Central won the 285-pound weight class with a 3-2 decision against Austin Chapman of Riverside.

Cabell Midland was fifth with 123 points and had Isaiah Vaughn as the 138-point winner. Vaughn defeated Mitchell Freeman from Point Pleasant in the finals, 5-1.

Class AA team winner Point Pleasant (230.5) finished ahead of East Fairmont (160). Point Pleasant had Isaac Short beating teammate Parker Henderson in the 106-pound finals by pin and Derek Raike winning the 120-pound title against Ammon Ohl of Class A team winner St. Joseph Academy from Pennsylvania by pin.

In the competition for middle school teams Edison from Parkersburg won with 256.2 points. Independence was second (222.5) and Point Pleasant came in third (213).

Point Pleasant Middle School had two individual champions. Gunner Andrick pinned Jimmie Bailes from Park Middle School of Beckley at 78 points and Tyler Hinzman beat Ayden Morris from Edison by decision, 5-4.

Lucas Talley from Hurricane Middle School downed Brady Roberts of Edison for the 102-pound title, 5-2.
