A Sandwich woman was charged with burglary after being accused of stealing a puppy from a van outside Harvest Chapel Church on Saturday morning.

Theresa Pekala, 35, of the 300 block of Wentworth Dr. in Sandwich, was charged with burglary, theft and unlawful trespass to a vehicle, according to a news release from the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office.

The Sheriff’s Office responded to the church for a report of a stolen puppy. The victim reported her puppy was stolen from her van. The windows in the van were down and the puppy had food, water and a bed inside. According to the news release, the temperature was 72 degrees outside and the victim was inside the church for about eight minutes.

Sandwich police located Pekala and her vehicle about 40 minutes later during a routine patrol. Pekala had the dog inside of her apartment and made no attempt to notify the church or call the police, according to the news release.

The dog was returned to her owner and an investigation showed the owner did not neglect the puppy and it was in good care. Pekala was transported to the DeKalb County Jail.
