Indians Place Rodriguez on Disabled List
CLEVELAND (AP) _ Pitcher Ricardo Rodriguez was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a strained triceps by the Cleveland Indians, who also claimed left-handed reliever Nick Bierbrodt off waivers Wednesday.
Rodriguez left his start on Sunday after pitching a season-low 1 2-3 innings against Arizona. The right-hander, who has complained of tightness in his arm recently, said he hurt himself while swinging a bat during batting practice in preparation for interleague play.
The Indians initially thought Rodriguez, who is 3-7 with a 5.47 ERA, would only need to miss one or two starts. On Tuesday, general manager Mark Shapiro said, ``this is not a DL situation. It is extremely minor.″
However, the Indians decided not to take any chances with Rodriguez, the second Cleveland starter to be sidelined by injury. Jason Bere underwent season-ending shoulder surgery on Wednesday.
Bierbrodt was 0-2 with a 9.68 ERA in 13 appearances _ five starts _ before the Devil Rays designated him for assignment on June 8.
The 25-year-old, a former first-round draft pick by Arizona in 1996, will pitch in relief for the Indians.
Bierbrodt pitched five seasons in the Diamondbacks’ system before being traded to Tampa Bay in 2001 for Albie Lopez.
Last June, he was shot in the right arm and chest by an assailant in Charleston, S.C.
Bierbrodt was shot while sitting in a taxi around 3 a.m. waiting in a drive-through line at a fast food restaurant in Charleston, where he was pitching for Tampa Bay’s Class-A team.
According to a police report, a man rode up beside the taxi on a bicycle. Witnesses said there was an argument between Bierbrodt and the man, who then fired shots and rode off.
