Pitching sinks Fuego in 5-3 season finale loss
The Santa Fe Fuego had a chance to end the 2018 Pecos League baseball season with a win.
Unfortunately, their pitching got in the way of a good ending.
The Trinidad Triggers scored four times to overcome a slow start and squeezed out a 5-3 win at Fort Marcy Ballpark on Thursday. The loss evened Santa Fe’s regular season record at 31-31, which was good enough for third place in the Pecos League Mountain Division.
Fuego starting pitcher Johnny Flogal allowed just one run over the first six innings as Santa Fe gave him a 2-1 lead. However, he struggled in the seventh, giving up a run on a wild pitch and two singles while a Fuego error allowed the second run to score that gave Trinidad a 3-2 lead.
The Triggers added a pair of runs in the eighth to take a 5-2 lead before the Fuego answered in the bottom of the frame on Chris Kwitzer’s RBI single.
Santa Fe put a pair of runners on base in the ninth, but Triggers reliever David Gates recorded the final put for the save.
