La Porte County man dies in crash
COOLSPRING TWP. – An 80-year-old La Porte County man was killed when he was pinned underneath his overturned pickup following a crash early Saturday.
La Porte County deputies responded to a single-vehicle accident just after 5 a.m. Saturday on CR-400N near the intersection of CR-850W in Coolspring Township, according to a statement from the La Porte County Sheriff’s Department.
They found a 2002 Ford Ranger pickup that had overturned after going down a steep embankment on the south side of the road. The driver and one occupant of the vehicle was found to be partially ejected from and pinned under the truck, the sheriff’s department said.
He was pronounced dead at the scene by the La Porte County Coroner’s Office and later identified as 80-year-old Daniel Harrington of rural La Porte County.
Evidence indicated the vehicle had been westbound on CR-400N when it left the road for an unknown reason and struck a guard rail, police said. The vehicle then continued left of center and off the roadway to the south, striking another guard rail in the eastbound lane. It continued off the road and down a steep embankment, rolling over at least once.
Harrington was thrown from the vehicle, which came to rest pinning him underneath. Police said it did not appear he was using a seatbelt at the time of the crash.
Results of a toxicology screen are pending, but police said it does not appear that drugs or alcohol were a factor in the crash.
The Coolspring Fire Department and La Porte County EMS also responded to the scene.
