Computer Students Come Up With Romantic Way To Raise School Funds

February 11, 1989

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (AP) _ Students trying to raise money usually go in for bake sales or car washes, but kids at a high school here have come up with a service that’s a hit with their classmates - computer dating.

With Valentine’s Day approaching, students have been lining up in the halls of Ottawa Hills High School at lunch hour, ready to pay $1 for the names of three potential dates whose answers to 20 questions most closely match theirs.

″The first two days we’ve had people piling around the table, throwing money at us,″ student Jason Woods said recently.

Computer student Jim Ruder said he spent two or three months writing the software for the dating service, then distributed questionnaires.

″We’re not up to Dating Game standards, yet,″ Ruder said. ″We haven’t said it is the perfect date or anything like that.″

So far, the students have raised about $200, which will go toward computer lab equipment.

Woods and Ruder have bigger ideas for their computer program. They hope to copyright it and market it to other schools.
