Maroon 5: Performing for ‘Girls Like You’ and guys, too

September 25, 2018

Maroon 5 is expected to headline the 2019 Super Bowl halftime show in Atlanta, but that doesn’t mean you have to wait until next year to see them do a live show. The Grammy-winning band will perform at Hartford’s XL Center on Wednesday, Oct. 10.

Fronted by Adam Levine — who pulls double duty as a coach on television’s singing competition show, “The Voice” — Maroon 5 is touring in support of its latest studio album, “Red Pill Blues.” The album includes the popular single, “Girls Like You,” featuring rapper Cardi B.

This upbeat pop song recently hit No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart. The ranking isn’t unusual in itself; Maroon 5 has had other top hits, such as “Moves Like Jagger.” But it is unusual in that it broke a Billboard record, marking the first time a pop tune had ruled the roost since January, ending a 34-week streak of rap hits.

Maroon 5 has been making music for over a decade now, with other No. 1 hits such as “Makes Me Wonder” (2007) and “One More Night” (2012). Now that “Girls Like You” is a smash, fans are wondering if Cardi B will appear in the Super Bowl show, or if she might pop up onstage in Hartford. We don’t know, but it sure would be fun if that happened.

The Red Pill Blues world tour features special guest Julia Michaels. The singer-songwriter, who is based in Los Angeles, is especially known for her debut single, “Issues.”

If you can’t make it to the Hartford show but are still in need of a Maroon 5 fix, consider spending New Year’s Eve in Las Vegas. Maroon 5 will be there for its annual New Year’s Eve shows at the Mandalay Bay Events Center.

Maroon 5 originated in Los Angeles, is known for its rock/R&B sound, and has sold over 36 million albums. Fans especially love the group’s music videos, such as the one for “Sugar,” which has been viewed more than 2.7 billion times. That’s the one in which the band’s musicians appear to crash people’s weddings, delighting newly married couples and their guests with surprise performances.

XL Center, 1 Civic Center Plaza, Hartford. Wednesday, Oct. 10, 7:30 p.m. $149.50, $99.50, $69.50, $49.50. 877-522-8499, xlcenter.com
