VEGAS FESTIVAL SHOOTING, ONE YEAR LATER

LAS VEGAS (AP) — A year ago, tens of thousands of country music fans gathered on the Las Vegas Strip for a festival. Then, amid a performance by Jason Aldean, the staccato sound of gunfire was heard, followed by screams as panicked fans tried to flee a fusillade of bullets fired from a hotel casino window overlooking the venue. When it was over, 58 were dead, and hundreds more hurt. During a pre-dawn ceremony today, a flock of 58 doves — one for each victim — was released. Authorities say the police investigation ended in August — and it turned up no motive, no conspiracy — and no other shooters involved.

PRESIDENT TRUMP TAKES ON “SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE” AGAIN

NEW YORK (AP) — “Saturday Night Live,” bad. Kanye West, good. That’s the gist of President Donald Trump’s latest critique of the show that loves to skewer him — and that he loves to hate. Trump took to Twitter yesterday, hours after the season premiere of SNL. Trump said he didn’t watch, because he says NBC show is “no longer funny” and “just a political ad for the Dems.” Saturday’s show had a skit featuring Matt Damon playing Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh. Kanye West wore a “Make America Great Again” cap at the end of the show and made an impromptu speech in support of Trump after the credits closed. Trump declared that “great.”

KAVANAUGH, FORD HEARING - RATINGS

NEW YORK (AP) — It was a real-life drama — and last week’s hearing on the Brett Kavanaugh nomination to the Supreme Court has the TV ratings to prove it. More than 20 million people watched the riveting session as Kavanaugh and Christine Blasey (BLAH’-see) Ford testified about a sexual assault she says he inflicted on her when they were in high school. He denies it. The day after, there was more captivating television, as Sen. Jeff Flake was confronted at a Capitol Hill elevator by two sex assault victims who chastised him for agreeing to approve Kavanaugh’s nomination. Shortly after that, Flake hammered out a deal to have the FBI take a week to investigate the allegations against Kavanaugh.

The 20.4 million people who watched Thursday’s hearing rivaled the audience for an event like a playoff football game or the Oscars.

KAVANAUGH CLASSMATE CHALLENGES NOMINEE

WASHINGTON (AP) — A Yale University classmate of Brett Kavanaugh suggests the Supreme Court nominee isn’t being truthful about his college drinking habits. Charles “Chad” Ludington issued a statement yesterday. In it, he says Kavanaugh was “a frequent drinker, and a heavy drinker.” Ludington is one of several individuals who have come forward to speak of Kavanaugh’s activities in college or high school — actions that threaten his confirmation to the nation’s highest court.

CHARLES AZNAVOUR DEAD

PARIS (AP) — Charles Aznavour, the French crooner and actor whose performing career spanned eight decades, has died. He was 94. He seduced fans around the world with his versatile tenor, lush lyrics and kinetic stage presence. He sang to sold-out concert halls until the end, resorting to a prompter only after having written upwards of 1,000 songs by his own estimate. His death was confirmed by the French Culture Ministry. Often compared to Frank Sinatra, Aznavour started his career as a songwriter for Edith Piaf. The French chanteuse took him under her wing. Like her, his fame ultimately reached well outside France: Aznavour was named entertainer of the century in an online poll by CNN and Time magazine in 1999.

CARDI B-STRIP CLUB FRACAS

NEW YORK (AP) — A lawyer for Cardi B says the rapper has received a summons in connection with a fight at a New York strip club. Attorney Jeff Kern said outside a Queens police station on Monday that he’s “aware of no evidence” that Cardi B “caused anybody any harm.” Cardi B smiled as she left the police station but did not comment. Police say she and her entourage were present at around 3 a.m. Saturday when a dispute occurred at the club. They say chairs and bottles were thrown and two bartenders were hit with debris. Investigators say the fracas may have involved a romantic dispute.

JEMELE HILL-THE ATLANTIC

NEW YORK (AP) — Jemele Hill is joining the staff of The Atlantic weeks after the outspoken personality left ESPN after 12 years as a commentator, anchor, reporter and writer. Hill posted on her Twitter feed a message from the publication’s editor-in-chief. Jeffrey Goldberg wrote Hill will be a staff writer “covering the intersection of sports, race, politics, gender and culture.” Hill attracted attention last year and was briefly suspended for opinionated messages on social media, including a tweet that referenced President Donald Trump as a “white supremacist who has largely surrounded himself w/ other white supremacists.” She also targeted Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones after he stated that players who disrespect the flag would not play for his team. She tweeted that fans who disagree with Jones should not buy the team’s merchandise.

GWYNNETH PALTROW-WEDDING

NEW YORK (AP) — It appears Gwyneth Paltrow married “Glee” co-creator Brad Falchuk over the weekend. The actress posted a photo on Instagram of two hands wearing matching wedding bands, appearing to confirm reports of a wedding. There was no caption to go along with the photo. Her publicist has not returned an email seeking comment. Paltrow, who turned 46 last Thursday, and Falchuk met on the “Glee” set and they announced their engagement in January. Paltrow eloped with Coldplay singer Chris Martin in 2003. The couple had two children before they separated in 2014 in what she described as a “conscious uncoupling.” They divorced in 2016.

BOX OFFICE

NEW YORK (AP) — You might think this is funny: it’s been more than two years since a straight-ahead comedy movie has topped the box office list. That trend has ended, with the rise of “Night School” to the No. 1 spot. The movie starring Kevin Hart and Tiffany Haddish took in an estimated $28 million over the weekend. The last pure comedy to top the box office list was in April, 2016 — when Melissa McCarthy’s “The Boss” accomplished the feat.

No. 2 on the box office list is “Smallfoot” with $23 million, followed by last weekend’s top movie, “The House With a Clock in Its Walls,” which took in $12.5 million.

OLD VIC THEATER - HARASSMENT

LONDON (AP) — The London theater company once headed by Kevin Spacey is trying to prevent abuses of power in the workplace. The Old Vic Theater has teamed up with 20 cultural organizations to deploy “guardians” — staffers who are especially trained to defend against bullying, harassment and other kinds of issues. The theater was rocked by scandal a year ago, when Spacey was accused of sexual misconduct. Authorities in both the U.K. and in the U.S. are investigating those allegations, which cost Spacey his job on “House of Cards.”

LADY GAGA-A STAR IS BORN

TORONTO (AP) — Lady Gaga says that if she ever acts again, the experience will have to be as deep as the one she had on “A Star Is Born” or it won’t be worth it. In an interview with The Associated Press alongside her co-star and director, Gaga said watching the film at the Venice Film Festival caused her to take 30 minutes alone in a back room to collect herself. The film’s combination of music stardom and substance abuse struck her forcefully. In the film, which opens Friday, Gaga plays an aspiring singer who has essentially given up on her dream after rejection because of the way she looks. The pop star says when she watches the film, she sees herself as much younger, like when she was 15 years old and writing songs at the piano.

CHER AND THE KENNEDY CENTER HONORS

WEST HOLLYWOOD, Calif. (AP) — It was one of the dramas that came up last year as the Kennedy Center Honors approached: would President Donald Trump attend the annual gala in Washington, D.C. And with Cher — one of Trump’s most frequent critics — to get a Kennedy Center Honor this year, the drama’s brewing again. Cher says she wishes her recognition had come while Barack Obama was still president. Meanwhile the White House says no decision has been made on whether Trump will take part in this year’s Kennedy Center Honors program.

MARTIN BALIN MOURNED, REMEMBERED

NEW YORK (AP) — It’s still unclear what caused Marty Balin to die. The founder and lead singer of the Jefferson Airplane died this past Thursday in Florida. He was on the way to a hospital for treatment when he died. In the mid-1970s, when Jefferson Airplane regrouped as Jefferson Starship, Balin sang lead on hits like “Miracles,” ″With Your Love” and “Count On Me.” He later had solo success with “Hearts” and “Atlanta Lady.”

LEBRON JAMES MAKES FIRST LAKERS APPEARANCE

SAN DIEGO (AP) — When LeBron James made his debut as a member of the Los Angeles Lakers last night, he did so at the same San Diego arena where Magic Johnson played his first game as a Laker 39 years ago. James missed his first shot in the purple and gold — but ended up with 9 points, three rebounds and four assists as the Lakers dropped their exhibition opener to Denver, 124-107.
