Maryland Baltimore County 71, Winthrop 65
ROCK HILL, S.C. (AP) _ Eric Wyatt scored 16 points in the second half to lead Maryland-Baltimore County to a 71-65 win over Winthrop Saturday.
With the Retrievers (8-10, 5-3) trailing 51-45 with 10 minutes left, Wyatt scored 13 of UMBC’s next 20 points, including a break away layup that put his team ahead by 10 at 69-59.
Wyatt was one of four UMBC players in double figures. Tony Thompson had 19 points while Marcy Lay and Artie Walker had 13 apiece.
Winthrop (5-12, 2-6) took a 19-18 lead eight minutes into the game and stretched the advantage to nine points at times, but the Eagles managed only 36 percent shooting by UMBC’s tough defense.
The Eagles’ David McMahan scored 18 and Mike Fayed had 11. They were Winthrop’s only double digit scorers. Fayed also had five assists.
UMBC sank six consecutive 3-pointers to take an 18-9 lead in the first six minutes. The Retrievers finished the game with 12 threes in 31 attempts.
