TOP STORY:

BALLISTICS RETESTING-NEW TRIAL

An Illinois man imprisoned for more than two decades for a murder conviction obtained with shoddy ballistic evidence is getting a chance to prove his innocence with a new trial that begins Thursday. Patrick Pursley, 52, spent the bulk of his time in prison representing himself, filing motions and trying to convince courts to retest the evidence using a more advanced system that links shell casings to guns. His efforts eventually made Illinois the only state in the country that allows retesting of ballistic evidence in appeals using technology that’s primarily used to put criminals behind bars, not exonerate them.
